Plaster is a versatile material in this process, used in both mold making and casting. You can make plaster copies of a statue or statue model by creating a two-part plaster mold, then pouring liquid plaster into the hardened mold. When the plaster dries and the mold is separated, you will have a perfect copy of your statue model. As you walk through the gallery, we invite you to not only explore the sculptures but to enjoy the captivating stories of their artistic creators and the subjects they portrayed. This is the most complicated, work-intensive and expensive step in the production of a plaster cast. It requires real craftsmanship. The process of casting itself is much less work-intensive. The mold is filled with plaster powder dissolved in water. Once the plaster has hardened and the mold been removed, we face a replica of the original.

I opened this book with the expectation that it would be about, at least principally, plaster casts of classical antiquity’s statuary (e.g., Roman, Greek, Near Eastern). Wrong. The volume—36 papers, originally delivered at a conference organized by the editors and Donna Kurtz and held in Oxford in —has in fact a much broader scope.

You see them here as they appear in the exhibit. Plaster Cast AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF BIRKENAU, Plaster Cast A plaster cast is a copy made in plaster of another 3-dimensional form.

The original from which the cast is taken may be a sculpture, building, a face, a pregnant belly, a fossil or other remains such as fresh or fossilised footprints – particularly in palaeontology (a track of dinosaur footprints made in this way can be seen outside the Oxford University Museum of Natural History).

Plaster casts were once a primary vehicle for an art education, but when the classical ideals they represent fell out of fashion, so too did casts.

Many cast collections were broken up, destroyed or, at best, relegated to basements in the course of the s. The plaster cast of a pulpit was constructed after the marble original which once stood in the Cathedral of pulpit has inscriptions running round the frieze and the base that make it clear that the sculptor was Giovanni Pisano () and that the work was completed by Reliefs show scenes from the life of Christ and the Last Judgment.

The other way of making moulds using plaster is if the cast will be made by ‘absorption casting’. that is, filling the mould completely with clay slip or liquid latex; waiting for a solid ‘rind’ to form against the plaster as the water is absorbed out; tipping out the excess liquid and waiting until the hollow shape is firm enough to.

Today, synthetic casts are used more often than plaster casts. They’re usually made out of a material called fiberglass, a type of moldable plastic.
